I recently ran into a business owner who was a little on the grumpy side. Ok, he was seriously grumpy! This guy whined and complained about his terrible employees, and how rude his customers were. As he talked I realized he didn’t have one nice thing to say about anything, and in that moment, I was once again reminded of the importance of gratitude.
An Attitude Adjustment
Gratitude, the act of being thankful and appreciative for everything that we have. I was reminded of the importance of gratitude because there was a time when I too was a grumpy business owner. I used to get caught up in unpleasant events and experiences that would leave me feeling stressed, overwhelmed, or upset.
I lived life as a victim, and blamed everybody and everything for my problems. It wasn’t until I started embracing gratitude and counting my blessings that the things in my life, along with my attitude, began to change.
Counting My Blessings
I originally started to count my blessings by writing them down in a journal every night before going to bed. My goal was to find ten things I was grateful for and write them down. During the first few weeks it was pretty easy to find things that I was grateful for, but as time went on I really had to do some thinking.
It was at this point that I realized how many things I actually take for granted. Things I have grown accustomed to that I think of as being normal. Things that are far better than what others have. As I reflected on these things, it became much easier to appreciate them, and caused me to feel ashamed for even complaining in the first place.
Gratitude is a Choice
By making it a practice to focus on the things I am grateful for, it has now become a conscious choice I make every morning as I start my day. As I awake each day I think about the things I am grateful for. I think about what an incredible day it is going to be, and I think about what is still yet to come my way in the future.
Sure there are days when I awake and literally have to stop and tell myself I am going to be happy and grateful that day. However, it sets the tone for my day, and by making this choice it’s as if I am rebooting my mind with thankfulness and appreciation. This might sound a bit silly, but it works for me.
Try It You Might Like It
There will never be a shortage of things in life for us to be grateful for, and I am grateful for that! Learning how to count my blessings has changed my attitude and my entire outlook on life. It keeps me internally centered in spite of all the events that are happening all around us. Have you counted your blessings lately? If not, you might want to give it a try. You might just like it.
